FOUR A.M. is pleased to present an installation of works by Jeff DeGolier. Sculpture Boombox Shelf for Obama is paired with an assemblage on canvas, Sunset at Mt. Terror. DeGolier began work on Boombox Shelf for Obama one year ago - a car stereo imbedded in a custom-made plywood box. It has been cut up and reassembled several times, and this is the end product. It’s a sculpture that can function as an appliance (stereo) and a piece of furniture (shelf). The radio is tuned to Christian station WFME (Where Faith Means Everything), New York, 1560 AM, whose radio transmitters are located just outside DeGolier's studio. Sitting atop the shelf is the artist's Barack Obama mug bought at a dollar store in 2006. Sunset at Mt. Terror is a new work. A double light switch in the bottom left hand corner of the canvas turns on an apparatus which causes the entire piece to vibrate. A sincere gesture towards making a curious and beautiful object, brimming with anxiety, combining notions of the sublime and its fragility into one canvas.
Anchored in an ongoing, prolonged exchange with everyday objects and materials, DeGolier makes mixed-media sculpture, assemblage paintings and photography. He renovates, customizes and reshapes discarded or unsophisticated objects with glamour and gestures of aspiration. The process echoes the American compulsion for excessive self-improvement. Car stereos, discarded parts of plastic furniture, and other relics of cheap consumer culture are some of the objects that are produced in the banal evolutions of common situations. Quotidien consumer goods reappear in several series of sculptures and relief paintings, often combined with the detritus of his active studio - sawdust, metal shavings, dried clumps of wood glue - a common thread across endless operations of adorning, tinkering, breaking and repairing. His relationship with these objects is overly romantic, with an attachment to a ridiculous design or a peculiar temper. He dually works with acts of reverence and eventually, through an abstracted view of our relationship with objects and their subsequent relationship to the world at large, irreverence.
Jeff DeGolier was born in Bellingham, WA. He received his BFA in Photography and Ceramic Art from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1999 and his MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2004.
